Advice and Information
The Whanganui Peoples Centre provides free advice, advocacy and information to Beneficiaries and low-income workers and their Whanau when interacting with Government Agencies such as Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) and Inland Revenue.
We give advice on the correct procedures to take when communicating with those Agencies so that their queries and concerns are resolved as soon as possible. We assist clients to fill out and explain the meaning of the forms handed out by Government Agencies. We also assist people with online applications. We advise clients on what entitlements and assistance they may be able to access.
Support and Advocacy
We support clients and provide an advocacy service to ensure that our clients and their Family/Whanau understand and receive their rights and entitlements. This may be just a matter of a phone call to the right person or it could entail going with the client to support them or negotiating on their behalf in their absence. Some clients have problems communicating because they could be shy, stressed out or for some other reason so it helps if someone with knowledge can be with them to assist. We make sure that they have the appropriate paperwork and I.D. so they don’t have to go back, and also make sure they know what the process is. This happens because we set up an appointment at our office before they go to Work & Income so they are prepared.
Referrals and networking
A high percentage of our clients come to us through referrals, mainly from word of mouth, Community Groups, local Iwi Organisations such as Te Oranganui, Whanau Ora, M.P’s Offices, Social Workers, Health Workers, etc. Of course that works both ways as we refer people to the right organisation rather than duplicate services that are equipped to deal with other issues such as legal advice or budgeting.
We believe that it is better for clients and their support people to be informed of their entitlements and procedures before they go to Government Agencies. Therefore we make ourselves available to make presentations at several organisations, tertiary providers, churches, and community groups, etc. We produce a lot of written material for them and run through all the different benefits, allowances and entitlements with them.
Anyone who feels they are having issues when communicating with Work & income or Inland Revenue, or just want to check out their entitlements whether on a benefit or are low-income workers can feel free to contact us.. Phone 06 345 8656
