Watch Council meetings from anywhere with live stream service

Whanganui District Council is enhancing its connections with the world, with Council meetings to be live streamed.

The Council’s meeting on November 8 will be the first to be streamed live on the Whanganui District Council website and Facebook page. The meeting starts at 1.00pm.

Mayor Hamish McDouall says live streaming enhances democracy and allows interested people to follow the debate.

“For some people, live streaming meetings is normal and essential, whereas for others it might take some getting used to. It allows people to watch from anywhere in the world, from the comfort of their own home, or from outside of New Zealand. We hope this tool will get more people engaged with the democratic process and for those who would not normally attend a Council meeting, it will provide a great insight.”

In October 2016, for the fifth year in a row, Whanganui was recognised as a Smart21 Intelligent Community, one of 21 places selected worldwide for making use of broadband technology to make their community a better place.

“One of the indicators the Intelligent Community Forum uses to select the Smart21 Intelligent Communities is how a community advocates for change and shows leadership in the broadband era. Live streaming is another way we can demonstrate how broadband technology can be used to engage people in the decisions being made on their behalf by their Council.”
