    As soon as the tide goes out South Beach is a 20km stretch of sand, excellent for a days picnic, swimming, surfing or fishing. Up in the dunes are fantastic offroading trails. Drive South and you can reach the mouth of the Whangehu River, or North will take you to the South Mole, another great fishing spot.

    To access, drive along Airport road until you pass the airport then follow the unpaved road to the left. There is a large carpark available but 4WD access to the beach is recommended.

    Although this is a relatively small reserve at 14.5 hectares, it is an excellent sample of a lowland forest type which was common in the area once.

    The reserve features a flat and well formed loop track approximately 20 minutes long . It offers a bush experience that walks you through species such as matai, totara, titoki, tawa, kowhai and kahikatea. The area is also home to an interesting array of birds. 

    Gordon Park is on the corner of Kaimatira Road and No.3 Line to the east of State Highway 4. Hop over the stile on Kaimatira Road or drive into the car park a little further down to the start of this short walk. There is a picnic table for a relaxing and quiet lunch!

    Kai Iwi (Mowhanau) Beach is located 19 kilometres northwest of Wanganui and is one of our most popular beaches.  This black iron sand beach is perfect for swimming, and the freshwater streams are great to paddle and wade through. There is also a large kids playground with plenty of activities, including a fantastic flying fox that traverses a stream! Public facilities available are picnic areas, toilets, and changing rooms. On a good summers day you may find the snack truck down by the picnic area and for the explorers there is a sunken fort, climbing rocks and hidden waterfalls further along the beach. A great place to spend the day.

    From Wanganui, head up St Johns Hill and follow Great North Road until you reach Rapanui Road on your left. Follow Rapanui Road for a while until you see Mowhanau Drive and the Welcome signs to the left.
