  • Located opposite the Whanganui City Bridge at the bottom of Victoria Avenue, the Durie Hill pedestrian tunnel leads to the historic Durie Hill Elevator. Built in 1919, it is the only earthbound elevator in New Zealand. A pedestrian tunnel leads 205 metres inside the hill to the elevator which rises 66 metres.

    Two viewpoints are located at the top, one (the orange tower) above the elevator's machinery room and the other on the nearby War Memorial Tower. 

    A walkway beside the elevator tower offers an alternative route descending 191 steps to the City Bridge.

    The elevator is open Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 6.00pm, Saturday to Sunday, 10.00am to 5.00pm, closed Christmas Day.

Kai Iwi (Mowhanau) Beach

  • Kai Iwi (Mowhanau) Beach is located 19 kilometres northwest of Wanganui and is one of our most popular beaches.  This black iron sand beach is perfect for swimming, and the freshwater streams are great to paddle and wade through. There is also a large kids playground with plenty of activities, including a fantastic flying fox that traverses a stream! Public facilities available are picnic areas, toilets, and changing rooms. On a good summers day you may find the snack truck down by the picnic area and for the explorers there is a sunken fort, climbing rocks and hidden waterfalls further along the beach. A great place to spend the day.

    From Wanganui, head up St Johns Hill and follow Great North Road until you reach Rapanui Road on your left. Follow Rapanui Road for a while until you see Mowhanau Drive and the Welcome signs to the left.
